Watching that awesome game (you know the one I mean) last Sunday evening a few words stood out for me - just watching those ladies on our screens and knowing the fight they’ve been through to finally lift that trophy - not just in the Euros but for the last however many years. I remember watching Bend it like Beckham as a kids twenty odd years ago and wondering when the world would catch up - who knew it would take so long?
So was resilience really key to Lionesses Euros win?
Both resilience and mental strength were words that kept coming up again for me.
Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” but I think that sells it way short.
5 Pillars of Resilience
It might surprise you to realise that the 5 pillars of resilience are actually:
Self awareness Mindfulness Self-care Positive Relationships Purpose
And see when I read those words the idea of building my resilience seems less hard, more attainable, maybe even…manageable?!

We all know that self care and self awareness have been buzz words for a couple of years now - we hear them a lot and yet how many of us really strive for these on a regular basis?
By understanding our strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, motivations and emotions we can really begin to understand ourselves, how other people perceive us and why we respond to others in the moment. Then by understanding what we need to do to show up as our best selves in the world and maintaining those needs we can meet lives challenges with confidence and with energy.
It seems to me that each of the above feeds into the others, that they overlap each other like a Venn diagram and in the middle is us, working on increasing our resilience and mental strength.
What with all the shit society is dealing with at the minute, fuel prices, energy costs, wars, politics and the rest - maybe we all need a little more of both to see us through.
Thank you ladies for proving that it’s worth it.
